What the Canada Post calculator asks for
The Find a Rate tool always follows the same order. Have these details ready before you start: a rate calculated from rough dimensions is not worth much.
- The address the parcel ships from.
- The destination country: Canada, USA or international.
- The destination address.
- The type of mailing: package or letter.
- The dimensions (length, width, height) and weight of the packed parcel.
Measure the closed box at its widest points, and weigh it with the contents and packing material inside. One extra centimetre on each side can be enough to push the volumetric weight up a bracket.
What sets the price at Canada Post
Canada Post says the amount is determined by the weight, size and destination of the item, and that add-on options such as additional coverage affect the cost. In practice, here is how each factor works.

If you compare the rate from Find a Rate with one from a platform or a colleague, first check which type of price each one is. Comparing a retail price with a business price tells you nothing about the carrier.
Why the quote and the label do not always match
- The dimensions entered in the calculator do not match the real box, which changes the volumetric weight.
- An option was added at purchase: signature, additional coverage or another option.
- The fuel surcharge changed between the quote and the purchase, since it is adjusted weekly.
- The quote used one type of price (retail) and the label was bought at another (business), or the other way around.
- The service chosen at purchase is not the one that was quoted.
The simple rule: re-quote right before you buy, with the box sealed, weighed and measured.
