How much does it cost to ship a 1 kg parcel in Canada?

Between CA$15.21 and CA$22.61 depending on distance. A 1 kg parcel in a 30×20×10 cm box costs CA$15.21 Toronto to Montréal, but CA$22.61 Toronto to Vancouver — same parcel, same weight, nearly 50% more.

Distance is not the only lever. Vancouver → Whitehorse at just 2 kg costs CA$32.18 — more than Montréal → Calgary at CA$23.79 for the same weight — because the destination postal code triggers a remote-area surcharge. That is exactly the gap you cannot see until you compare.

Why your rate is what it is: the 9 factors that move the price

A shipping rate is not a price per kilometre. Nine variables combine, and knowing what each one does is how you take back control of the bill.

  • Actual weight — what the scale says. The starting point, rarely the deciding factor.
  • Dimensional weight — the space taken in the truck. On large light boxes, this is what gets billed.
  • Distance and zone — each carrier splits Canada into rate zones; crossing a zone boundary costs more than one extra kilometre.
  • Remote or rural postal code — a flat surcharge is added, sometimes $5 to $15, regardless of weight.
  • Residential vs commercial address — delivering to a home costs more than delivering to a business.
  • Service speed — express, priority or regular; the easiest lever to adjust.
  • Fuel surcharge — a variable percentage on the base rate, revised monthly by the carriers.
  • Additional handling — oversize, over-long, irregular or non-stackable parcels.
  • Declared value and insurance — coverage beyond the included cap adds to the rate.

Dimensional weight: the formula, and each carrier's divisor

The formula is simple: Length × Width × Height (in cm) ÷ divisor = dimensional weight (kg). The carrier bills whichever is greater, actual or dimensional weight.

A concrete example: a 50×40×30 cm box holding a 2 kg coat. The volume is 60,000 cm³; divided by 5,000 that is 12 kg dimensional. You pay for 12 kg, not 2 kg. Shrinking that box to 40×30×20 cm drops dimensional weight to 4.8 kg — the same shipment for far less.

CarrierTypical divisor (cm → kg)
Postes Canada / Canada Post6 000
Purolator6 000
UPS5 000
FedEx5 000
DHL Express5 000
Canpar6 000

Divisors vary by service, contract and year, and carriers revise them without notice. Treat this table as a reference and confirm the exact divisor at quote time — the calculator above already applies each carrier's divisor to your box.

Guessing the right weight: what common items actually weigh

An under-declared weight comes back as an adjustment later, once the carrier weighs the parcel. Here is how to get it right the first time.

WeightTypical contents
≤ 0,5 kgJewellery, cosmetics, documents, a t-shirt
0,5 – 1 kgA book, a hoodie, a small electronic part
1 – 3 kgA pair of shoes, a small appliance, 2-3 garments
3 – 10 kgA winter coat, a home accessory, a box of parts
10 kg +Small furniture, a case of stock, equipment

Which carrier wins, by weight and lane

No carrier wins everywhere, which is the whole reason to compare on every shipment. In our 2026-08-07 sample: Nationex takes light Quebec-Ontario corridor lanes, UPS dominates long-haul 1–2 kg and cross-border, and Canada Post retakes the lead at 5 kg and above and into remote regions. The carriers compared here are Canada Post, Purolator, UPS, FedEx, DHL Express, Canpar, Nationex, GLS and UniUni.

How to actually pay less: 7 levers that work

  • Right-size the box — the highest-return lever, because of dimensional weight.
  • Deliver to a commercial address or a pickup point rather than a home.
  • Accept one more day: regular service often costs 20–30% less than express.
  • Consolidate several items into one parcel instead of shipping separately.
  • Declare the exact weight — a wrong weight returns as an adjustment, usually with a fee.
  • Compare on every shipment instead of defaulting to one carrier.
  • Drop off at a counter rather than booking a pickup when volume is low.

What the displayed rate covers — and what it does not

The displayed rate includes the carrier's base rate, the fuel surcharge and, where it applies, the residential surcharge. It excludes sales taxes, international duties, and any post-shipment adjustment if the carrier re-weighs or re-measures the parcel. The table's prices use the standard new-account ShipSmarter markup with no volume commitment: this is genuinely what a business signing up today pays.

Shipping rate FAQ

How much does it cost to ship a 1 kg parcel in Canada?

A 1 kg parcel from Toronto to Montréal costs CA$15.21 at the ShipSmarter rate (sampled 2026-08-07); the same parcel to Vancouver is CA$22.61. Your exact price depends on both postal codes, the box volume and the service you choose.

Are these real-time rates?

The calculator queries carriers live on every request, so the price shown after your search is a real-time rate. The "typical rates" table is a dated sample from 2026-08-07, not a live quote.

Do I need an account to get a quote?

No. The calculator is free and asks for no email, phone or street address — just postal codes and a weight. A free ShipSmarter account is only needed to see every carrier and buy the label.

Which carrier is cheapest in Canada?

There is no single answer: the winner changes with weight, lane and address type. In our sample Nationex wins light Quebec-Ontario corridor lanes, UPS wins long-haul 1–2 kg, and Canada Post wins at 5 kg and above — which is exactly why comparing on every shipment pays.

What is dimensional weight and how do I calculate it?

Multiply length × width × height in centimetres, then divide by your carrier's divisor to get a weight in kilograms. The carrier bills whichever is greater — actual or dimensional weight — which is why a large, light box costs more than you expect.

Does the price include fuel, residential and taxes?

The displayed rate includes the base rate, the fuel surcharge and the residential surcharge where it applies. Sales taxes and international duties are not included.

Why is my quote higher than the table above?

The table uses one specific box and weight on one specific lane. A remote postal code, a residential address, a bulkier box or an oversize parcel each add a surcharge. Vancouver → Whitehorse at 2 kg costs CA$32.18 precisely because of the remote-area surcharge.

How much does it cost to ship from Canada to the US?

A 2 kg parcel from Montréal to New York was CA$44.26 in our 2026-08-07 sample, before import duties and taxes. Cross-border shipments also require a customs invoice and an HS code per item.

Can I get Canada Post rates here?

Yes. Canada Post is one of the carriers compared, alongside Purolator, UPS, FedEx, DHL, Canpar, Nationex, GLS and UniUni. Enter your postal codes to see which one wins on your lane.
