The cheapest way to ship a package in Canada is to compare the same packed parcel across several carriers, after cutting what drives the price up: a box that is too big (dimensional weight), a faster service than you need, a paid pickup instead of a drop-off, and avoidable surcharges. For a small, heavy parcel, Canada Post's flat rate box is also worth the math.
Pay for the right weight: box size
Carriers bill the greater of two weights: the actual weight or the dimensional weight, worked out from the box size. A large, light box is billed like a heavy one. Picking the smallest box that still protects the contents is often the simplest lever.
| Carrier | Services | Factor (cm³ per kg) |
|---|---|---|
| Canada Post | Expedited Parcel, Regular Parcel | 6,000 |
| Canada Post | Xpresspost, U.S. and international | 5,000 |
| FedEx | Shipments within Canada and international | 5,000, dimensions rounded up |
Canada Post's own example: a 100 × 60 × 20 cm box weighing 8 kg is billed at 24 kg with Xpresspost. The same goods in a smaller box can drop into a lower weight band.
Service and packaging change the rate grid
Canada Post describes its method: you pick the service, the rate code comes from matching the origin and destination postal codes, then the price is read off the billable weight. Each service has its own grid, so asking for a faster service than your deadline needs changes the grid used.
Canada Post's flat rate box works differently: one price to any destination in Canada, whatever the weight up to 5 kg. It comes in four sizes, is single use and takes no added options such as extra coverage or signature. It can pay off when the parcel is small, heavy and going far; compare it with a weight-based shipment on the same route.
Drop-off or pickup: what carriers publish
| Carrier | Pickup | Drop-off |
|---|---|---|
| Canada Post | One-time pickup: flat fee per pickup, any number of parcels, free with Priority. Recurring pickup: fee based on your annual spend, free above a threshold. Solutions for Small Business account required. | Post office, or a street letter box if the parcel fits |
| UPS | Pickup available, extra fee | UPS Access Point, Authorized Shipping Outlet, UPS Customer Centre |
| Purolator | A driver collects at your address | Reduced price off list rates for walk-in customers without an account at participating retail locations (excluding taxes and surcharges) |
| Canpar | Additional charge for residential pickup or delivery | See Canpar drop-off points |
If you ship one parcel at a time, dropping off avoids pickup fees at Canada Post and UPS. If you ship several parcels the same day, a Canada Post one-time pickup covers all of them for a single fee.
Surcharges added to the base rate
- Fuel: Canada Post resets it weekly, on Mondays; Purolator (courier) monthly. Canada Post is applying temporary relief on eligible domestic parcels from October 5, 2026 to January 3, 2027.
- Residential delivery: UPS, FedEx and Purolator publish a surcharge for delivery to a residential address.
- Remote areas: UPS (extended area, by postal code), FedEx (out of delivery area) and Purolator (beyond point) add charges based on the destination.
- Size: an oversized parcel can trigger charges. Measure the closed box before asking for a price.
Compare the same parcel, at the same total
- Measure and weigh the box once closed, then keep exactly those values for every quote.
- Use the same postal codes, the same handover date and the same options (signature, coverage).
- Say whether the destination is residential: the surcharge changes the total.
- Compare the total with tax and surcharges included, not the base rate.
- Pick the cheapest service that meets your deadline, then check whether it is guaranteed.
- If you ship often, a business program can lower your prices: at Canada Post, Solutions for Small Business sets a savings level from your past 12 months of spend, reviewed every quarter.
