Canada Post sells no product literally called "Express". The two fast domestic services are Priority, the fastest national service, and Xpresspost, one step below it at an often lower price. Both include tracking and an on-time delivery guarantee subject to conditions. Expedited Parcel and Regular Parcel are not express services. To the USA and internationally, Xpresspost carries the fast role: Priority Worldwide was discontinued on August 1, 2023. There is no service called "Canada Post Express"
This is the most common source of confusion. "Express" is a generic industry word, not a Canada Post product name. When a customer asks for express, what they are really asking for is the fastest service available on their lane. Inside Canada that narrows to two products: Priority and Xpresspost. Every other parcel service, Expedited Parcel and Regular Parcel, is a ground service: tracked and economical, but not built for a next-day arrival.
The distinction matters because the two families behave differently when something goes wrong. Priority and Xpresspost carry an on-time delivery guarantee subject to conditions. The ground services give you an estimate, not a commitment. If your customer paid for a date, that difference is what you are actually buying, not just a few hours of transit.

Published general standards target the next business day between many urban centres for Priority, and roughly one business day locally and regionally for Xpresspost, two nationally. Those are general standards, not a promise for your shipment: the lane, the deposit time and regional exclusions all move the real date.
Express to the USA and internationally
Outside Canada the picture changes. Priority Worldwide, Canada Post's premium international service, was discontinued on August 1, 2023: if a guide online still lists it, that guide is out of date and you can no longer buy the label. The fast role falls to Xpresspost USA and Xpresspost International, which have their own standards and their own exclusions, separate from the domestic version.
This is also the lane where a private carrier often becomes competitive. For an urgent parcel to the USA, a service from FedEx, UPS, DHL or Purolator may offer an earlier date, sometimes at a smaller price gap than expected, especially on heavy or bulky shipments. Do not assume the postal service is automatically cheapest just because it often is at home.
None of these transit times is a promise until your real addresses, dimensions and weight are in a quote. Service standards, surcharges and regional exclusions change: confirm the date and the price at the rate step, before you buy the label.
Paying less for the same date
The most common expensive mistake is buying the fastest service by reflex. On many short lanes, Expedited Parcel arrives the same day as Xpresspost for a fraction of the price, simply because the distance is too short for speed to change anything. Conversely, on a long east-west lane, the price gap between a ground service and a fast one can be far thinner than expected.
- Compare the date, not the service name: two products that both land on Thursday are not worth the same price.
- Check dimensional weight: a light but bulky box can be billed on volume, which erases the saving on a ground service.
- Look at what is included: coverage and signature are sometimes built in, sometimes a paid option.
- Put at least one private carrier in the comparison, especially to the USA.
- Re-run the comparison for every shipment: the winner changes with the postal code and the box size.
