To track a UPS parcel, use the form at the top of this page or open official UPS tracking. The number usually starts with 1Z and is in the seller's shipping email, on your drop-off receipt, or printed below the barcode on the label. The status advances at each scan, not continuously: several hours with no new event is normal, especially overnight and on weekends. On a cross-border shipment, a pause at customs clearance is common and does not mean the parcel is lost.
How to track a UPS parcel
Your UPS parcel is visible in three places, and they do not always show the same thing at the same moment:
| Where you look | What you see there | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| UPS's tracking page | Network scans from pickup through delivery, plus the expected delivery date. | The recipient |
| The seller's email or account | A status summary, often a few hours behind the actual scans. | A quick glance |
| Your shipping platform | Tracking tied to the order, the customer and the invoice, across every carrier you use. | The merchant shipping it |
If you are the recipient, start with the UPS page: it is the most current source. If you are the merchant who created the label, your shipping platform stays the reference, because it is what ties the tracking number back to the right order and the right customer.
One useful detail that is specific to UPS: depending on how the shipment was created, the tracking field also accepts a shipper reference or the number printed on the delivery notice left at the door. If the order reference is all you have on hand, try that before concluding the number is lost.
Where to find your UPS tracking number
The number lives in four places, from fastest to most reliable:
- The shipping confirmation email the seller sends, usually as a clickable link.
- The orders section of your account with that retailer.
- The receipt handed to you at the counter if you dropped the parcel off yourself.
- The label itself: the number is printed below the main barcode.
The most common format starts with 1Z followed by a run of letters and digits. It is not the only one, though: some services and consolidated shipments travel under a different format, and a delivery notice carries its own number. Do not assume a number that looks different from the last one is invalid: test it on the tracking page first.
| What you have in hand | What it is | Usable for tracking? |
|---|---|---|
| A number starting with 1Z | The most common parcel number format. | Yes, directly |
| The number on a delivery notice left at the door | The record of the delivery attempt, with the next options. | Yes, in the same field |
| A shipper reference or order number | The reference the merchant attached to the shipment. | Sometimes, depending on how it was created |
| A number that matches none of the three | Often a shipment handed to UPS by a partner or a consolidation service. | Check with the merchant |
One important point: a number the UPS page accepts but shows no events for does not mean the parcel is lost. It almost always means the label was created and the parcel has not been scanned into the network yet. For the arrival date, rely on the estimated delivery date shown for your specific lane when you quote or buy the label: that is the only one that applies to your shipment. Carrier rules and status wording change, so always confirm at the rate step.
What UPS tracking statuses mean
The exact wording can vary by service and as the site is updated. These are the categories you will see in practice, what each actually means, and which ones need something from you:
| Status shown (category) | What it means | Do you need to act? |
|---|---|---|
| Label created / information received | The shipper created the label. The parcel is not in UPS hands yet. | No: wait for the first scan |
| Picked up / origin scan | UPS has the parcel. The business-day clock starts here, not when the label was created. | No |
| In transit | The parcel is moving between facilities. A long lane can run several days with no new visible scan. | No |
| Arrived at facility / departed from facility | The parcel is passing through a regional hub, often the last step before a route is assigned. | No |
| Out for delivery | The parcel is on a vehicle for the day. That day can end in the early evening. | No: wait until end of day |
| Delivery attempted | Nobody to receive it, a signature was required, or access was blocked. A notice is usually left behind. | Yes |
| Exception / held | Incomplete address, damage, a customs hold on a cross-border shipment, or a sorting problem. | Yes |
| Delivered | The parcel was handed over. The detail line often shows the time and, depending on the service, who signed. | Only if nothing arrived |
My UPS tracking is not updating: what to do
Stalled tracking is almost always a scan question, not a lost parcel. Parcels are scanned at fixed points in the network, not continuously: between two points nothing changes on screen even though the truck is moving. The most common causes:
- The label exists but the parcel has not been handed to UPS yet: no events until the first scan happens.
- A long lane between two facilities: several days can pass between visible scans.
- A weekend or a statutory holiday: transit estimates count business days, so tracking can sit still from Friday evening to Monday morning.
- A cross-border shipment at customs clearance: a pause of one to a few business days is common, especially when a document or a declared value needs clarifying.
- An open exception: incomplete address, recipient unavailable or damaged parcel, which puts the shipment on hold pending an instruction.
If tracking stays frozen beyond two business days with no explanation, contact the merchant rather than UPS directly. The shipping contract is between the carrier and the shipper: an inquiry opened by the merchant almost always moves faster than a call from the recipient. On a cross-border shipment held at customs, the shipper is also the one who can supply the missing commercial invoice or HS code.
Marked delivered but nothing arrived
This is the most frustrating situation, and it resolves more often than people expect. Before concluding it was stolen, run these checks in order:
- Read the tracking detail: it often names the exact spot where the parcel was left and the time.
- Check the usual drop spots: side door, balcony, shelter, behind a planter, with the building manager or at the office.
- Look for a delivery notice: it may say the parcel is waiting at a pickup point.
- Ask the immediate neighbours: delivery to the wrong door is the single most common cause.
- Wait until the end of the following day: a delivered status recorded too early sometimes corrects itself.
If none of that turns it up, the seller is still your contact. They can open an inquiry, request the proof of delivery, and decide on a refund or a reship. Keep the tracking number and a screenshot of the delivered status with its timestamp: those are the two things you will be asked for.
If you are the merchant doing the shipping
Tracking one parcel is simple. Tracking three hundred parcels spread across four carriers is not. When some of your shipments go out with UPS and the rest with Canada Post, Purolator or FedEx, the real cost is not the rate: it is the time spent opening four different sites to answer "where is my order".
That is the problem a shipping platform solves: one dashboard, every shipment tied back to its order and its customer, and the status visible without switching tabs. MesColis is not the only tool that does this and does not claim to be. What we do: compare Canadian carriers side by side for the same parcel, each with its real delivery date, then keep the label and the tracking in one place. Free account, no contract, no minimum volume.
And if what you really want to know is whether UPS was the right choice for that lane, the answer shows up at the quote step: that is where each carrier’s real delivery date appears side by side.
Frequently asked questions
Does UPS deliver on weekends in Canada?
Saturday delivery exists on some services and in some areas, but it is not universal, and Sunday is not a standard delivery day. That is why tracking can sit unchanged from Friday evening to Monday morning without anything being wrong. Confirm the expected delivery date for your lane at the rate step.
