What sets the price
Four variables account for nearly all the gap between two quotes, and they apply everywhere, whatever the carrier:
- Billable weight — the greater of actual and volumetric weight (below). It is the most under-estimated lever of the four.
- Distance and zone — each carrier splits its network into rate zones; crossing a zone boundary costs more than one extra kilometre.
- Address type — a residential delivery usually costs more than a business address, and a remote region adds a surcharge.
- Accessorials — insurance, signature, declared value and, internationally, duties and taxes.
Volumetric weight: why a large light box costs more
Carriers bill space as much as mass. They compute a volumetric weight — length × width × height divided by a contractual divisor, commonly 5,000 for express — and bill the greater of the two. So a 40×30×30 cm box weighing only 2 kg is billed at roughly 7 kg.
The divisor is contractual and varies by carrier and service. The figure that matters is the one shown at the rate step for your shipment.
