Canada Post or DHL? For a parcel abroad, Canada Post offers several tiers, from Small Packet (no tracking) to Xpresspost-International (tracking and a guarantee, 4 to 7 projected business days). DHL Express is an express courier to more than 220 countries and territories, with options delivered by 9:00, 10:30 or noon. Compare both for the same parcel.
Two different ways to deliver abroad
Canada Post is the national postal service: it delivers to every Canadian address and offers a range of international services, from the most economical to the fastest. DHL Express is an international express courier network that, according to DHL, covers more than 220 countries and territories.
The difference shows in the options. With Canada Post, you trade off price, tracking and speed. With DHL Express, every service is express; what you mainly pick is the delivery time.
International services compared
| Service | Tracking | Published commitment | Published timing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Canada Post: Small Packet-International | No | None | Under 2 kg; the most economical |
| Canada Post: International Parcel (air or surface) | Not included | None | Depends on the mode chosen |
| Canada Post: Tracked Packet-International | Yes | No On-time Delivery Guarantee | 6 to 10 projected business days; under 2 kg; select countries |
| Canada Post: Xpresspost-International | Yes, with signature | On-time Delivery Guarantee | 4 to 7 projected business days; select countries |
| DHL Express Worldwide | Yes | Day-definite delivery | End of day |
| DHL Express 9:00, 10:30 and 12:00 | Yes | Time-definite delivery | By 9:00, 10:30 or noon, where offered |
Canada Post’s timings are its projected arrivals, not promises, except where the On-time Delivery Guarantee applies. DHL does not publish day counts by destination on its Canadian pages: the date offered depends on the route. DHL’s timed options do not serve every address.
What about shipping within Canada?
According to its Canadian Service Point pages, DHL Express Canada has offered shipping of documents and parcels across Canada since May 2025, in addition to international. Canada Post, for its part, delivers to every Canadian address, under the Canadian Postal Service Charter.
Duties, taxes and customs
With DHL Express, duties and taxes are paid by the receiver (DTU) unless the shipper selects Duties & Taxes Paid (DTP) on the waybill; they are then billed to the shipper’s account. If nothing is indicated, DTU is the default.
Whatever the carrier, an international shipment needs an accurate description of the contents and their value. If your customer should pay nothing on delivery, check before you buy that the service you pick lets you prepay duties.
How to choose for your parcel
- Small, light item, not urgent: Canada Post Small Packet-International or Tracked Packet-International, depending on whether you want tracking.
- Larger parcel, not urgent: Canada Post International Parcel, by air or surface.
- Full tracking and a guarantee, no set time: Xpresspost-International, if the destination country is served.
- Delivery before a set time abroad: DHL Express 9:00, 10:30 or 12:00.
- The recipient should pay nothing on delivery: with DHL, select DTP.
- To decide, get both prices with the same packed parcel, the same destination and the same options.
