Standard vs Expedited vs Express International Shipping From Canada (2026)

Standard, expedited or express: what the international speed tiers mean, what Canada Post, UPS, FedEx and DHL call them, and which one to pick for your parcel.

Standard vs Expedited vs Express International Shipping From Canada (2026)
Quick answer

Standard (or economy), expedited and express are speed tiers, not carriers. Standard is the slowest option and often the cheapest; expedited sits in the middle; express is the fastest, with detailed tracking and priority customs clearance, at a higher price. Every carrier gives these tiers its own names. Compare the estimated dates and total prices for your parcel before you buy.

Three speed tiers, not three carriers

When an online store shows "standard international shipping" or "express", it is describing a service speed, not a company. Canada Post, UPS, DHL Express and FedEx all sell several speed tiers on the same lane. The same parcel to France can leave on an economy service with one carrier or on express with another, at very different prices and dates.

  • Standard or economy: the slowest route, often the cheapest. With Canada Post, part of the journey can travel by surface.
  • Expedited: a balance of price and speed, usually by air, with end-to-end tracking.
  • Express: the fastest tier, by air, with detailed tracking and customs clearance handled as a priority by the carrier.

What each carrier calls its tiers

The names change from carrier to carrier, which makes comparing them hard. This table sorts the main international services by tier. Treat it as a map, not a promise: which services are offered depends on the destination, weight and dimensions of your parcel.

Service names, coverage and transit times change, and they vary by destination. Go by the services, prices and estimated dates shown at the rate step for your parcel, not by a general table.

Standard is not always the cheapest. For a heavy or bulky parcel, an expedited or express service can sometimes cost barely more, or even less, depending on the lane and the dimensional weight. That is why you compare the total price for the real parcel rather than assume.

Which tier to choose for your shipment

  • Standard: a light, low-value item, a customer who is not in a hurry, or a PO box address (which the post serves).
  • Expedited: most online orders, when the customer wants reliable tracking without paying for express.
  • Express: a deadline, a valuable item, urgent documents, or a customer who is paying for speed.

Also think about what you show your customer. If your store promises "express shipping", pick an express service when you buy the label; otherwise the date your customer sees will not match the service you actually bought.

Duties and taxes: speed does not change who pays

The speed tier does not change the destination country's duties and taxes. What changes is who handles customs clearance and how the recipient is billed. With prepaid duties (DDP), you pay the duties up front and the recipient has nothing to pay on delivery; otherwise they often pay at the door or on a bill from the carrier. On MesColis, the DDU or DDP choice is made at the confirmation step, for the services that offer it.

Compare the tiers for your parcel

MesColis is not a carrier. Enter the destination, weight and dimensions of your parcel: we show the services that serve that lane side by side, from economy to express, each with its total price and estimated number of business days. You see the real price and time gap between standard and express for that exact shipment, instead of guessing.

With a free MesColis account, no contract and no minimum volume, you compare every speed tier for the same parcel before you buy the label.

Frequently asked questions

What is standard international shipping?

It is the slowest and often cheapest service tier for a shipment abroad. It often relies on the destination country's post office for final delivery, with tracking that can be limited in that country.

What is the difference between expedited and express?

Expedited balances price and speed; express is the fastest tier, with detailed tracking and priority customs clearance. Exact transit times depend on the carrier and the lane: check the estimated date at the rate step.

Is standard always cheaper than express?

No. For a heavy or bulky parcel, a faster service can sometimes cost barely more, or less, depending on the lane and the dimensional weight. Compare the total price for your actual parcel.

Does the shipping speed change duties and taxes?

No, duties and taxes depend on the destination country, the value and the type of goods. Speed mainly changes who clears the parcel and how the recipient is billed, unless you prepay the duties (DDP).
